Every Hitsujibungaku Anime Song

Hitsujibungaku (羊文学) has emerged as a rising star in Japan’s alternative rock scene.

Initially formed during their high school years, the dynamic group now consists of Moeka Shiotsuka (vocals, guitar, songwriter), Yurika Kasai (bass), and Hiroa Fukuda (drums). Following their major record label debut in 2020, the trio has gained attention through their high-profile anime collaborations.

This article introduces every Hitsujibungaku anime song featured in a series or movie.

Burning – Oshi no Ko

“Burning” is the first ending theme for Oshi no Ko Season 2. Released on July 3, 2024, this Hitsujibungaku anime song was timed to coincide with the premiere of the second season of the hit series.

In a video on the official Oshi no Ko YouTube channel, Yurika and Moeka shared the band’s insights on the song. Moeka revealed, “We carefully read and reread the feelings of the various characters, starting with Aqua, and wrote the song with great care.”

This meticulous approach is evident in the song’s emotional depth—including a heavier, guitar sound that is noticeably different from their previous anime collaborations.

more than words – Jujutsu Kaisen

“more than words” is the ending theme for the Shibuya Incidents arc in the second season of Jujutsu Kaisen. Released on September 27, 2023, this Hitsujibungaku anime song became a massive success.

In her official comment, Moeka reflected on the challenges of creating this (soon-to-be) hit song. She candidly shared, “The production of this song was tough, but I was repeatedly inspired by the courage and strength shown by Itadori and the others.”

With a combination of painful yet uplifting lyrics, “more than words” is a moving tribute that aligns perfectly with the series. The band shares that “even when you are on the brink of losing, I think this song can give you the strength to take that final step.”

“more than words” became Hitsujibungaku’s first song to surpass 100 million streams on the BILLBOARD Japan charts. Thanks to the popularity of Jujutsu Kaisen, this song has helped the band gain recognition, both in Japan and overseas.

Hikaru toki – The Heike Story

“Hikaru toki” (光るとき) is the opening theme for The Heike Story, an anime adaptation of the historical epic, The Tale of the Heike. Released on January 12, 2022, this track marks Hitsujibungaku’s first song in an anime series.

In the band’s official comment, Moeka expressed how honored and grateful they felt to encounter a story with such complex emotions that were, in her words, “unlike anything I had felt before.”

They share, “Every time I read the script, I learned about the humanly beautiful aspects of the Heike people, who are often spoken of with an arrogant image.” This Hitsujibungaku anime song seeks to honor these often-overlooked qualities, bringing a nuanced portrayal of the Heike clan.

Mayoiga – The House of the Lost on the Cape

“Mayoiga” (マヨイガ) is the theme song for the movie The House of the Lost on the Cape. Released on July 7, 2021, this Hitsujibungaku anime song embodies the comforting notion of having a “place to return to.”

In the band’s comment, Moeka explained, “The theme song ‘Mayoiga’ is filled with wishes for Yui and Hiyori’s happiness…I composed this song with the hope that they will experience a lot of beauty and kindness in their future days and become wonderful adults.”

The song is a heartfelt tribute to each character’s journey, emphasizing the importance of finding a place of affirmation–whether physical or emotional.
