Formed in 2005, the Osaka-based trio, consisting of Kazuumi Kumagai (vocals, guitar, songwriter), Taiyu Ishikawa (bass), and Takuya Hirose (drums), came together during their middle school days.

Maoh – From The Misfit of Demon King Academy II

Released on April 13, 2024, “Maoh” (魔王) is the second opening theme for The Misfit of Demon King Academy II, the second season of the Maoh Gakuin anime series. this BURNOUT SYNDROMES anime song is featured during the Selection Judgment Arc. 

In their official comment about the series, they express, “Fantastical yet logical. Cruel yet overflowing with love…such is the Selection Judgment arc.” They add, “The unstraightforward worldview of [the series] is tightly packed into this song.”

The song also features a collaboration with Nao Toyama, who voices the character Arcana. In her official comment, she shares, “I was absorbed by the lyrics, devastated by tragedy and devoid of salvation, that tear at one’s soul.”

Good Morning [New] World! – From Dr. STONE Ryusui

“Good Morning [New] World!” is the opening theme for the TV special Dr. STONE Ryusui, an hour-long special that takes place between seasons 2 and 3 of the hit series. 

Released on August 21, 2019, this anime opening is a rearranged version of “Good Morning World!”, the original BURNOUT SYNDROMES anime song for season one.

For this new version, the song is carefully tailored to fit Ryusui Nanami’s storyline while keeping the adventurous spirit of the series. This reimagined track blends a classical sound with a fast-paced rhythm—enhancing the original while continuing to match the dynamic world of Dr. STONE.

BLIZZARD – From Those Snow White Notes

“BLIZZARD” is the first opening theme for the anime Those Snow White Notes (Mashiro no Oto). Released on May 19, 2021, this BURNOUT SYNDROMES anime song was created with the image of lonely snow in the middle of winter.

Interestingly, the band crafted the song with a focus on incorporating the shamisen, which Kumagai notes “was central to the song’s development,” in an interview—creating a unique fusion of rock and traditional Japanese music.

Kumagai also delved into the song’s lyrical composition, mentioning a departure from the usual pressure to create a “cheer song.” Instead, “BLIZZARD” evolved into a subtle love song with relatable lyrics. “Instead of delivering a direct message, I wanted to create something that listeners might feel, ‘I get that.'”

Ginsekai – From Those Snow White Notes

Released alongside “BLIZZARD”, “Ginsekai” (銀世界) is the second opening theme for “Those Snow White Notes” (Mashiro no Oto). This anime opening was made with the image of protagonist Setsu Sawamura meeting friends and running towards spring.

Unlike “BLIZZARD,” “Ginsekai” incorporates guitar music specifically designed to emulate the shamisen. “We wanted to take a different direction from ‘BLIZZARD,’” Kumagai explained in an interview. Hirose also noted the song’s momentum and “strong color to its musical image,” sharing his excitement to see how it will collaborate with the anime.

Reflecting on the creation process, Kumagai shares, “We made it as we usually do, but I have a strong feeling of ‘We made a great song.’”

Wake Up H×ERO! – From Super HxEros

“Wake Up H×ERO!” is the opening theme for the anime Super HxEros. The song features Retto Enjou, the main character of the series, which is voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka.

Released on August 26, 2020, this BURNOUT SYNDROMES anime song is actually credited to HXEROS SYNDROMES, a special VTuber (virtual YouTuber) unit produced by the band for performing this track. 

In their official comment, Kumagai spoke about how he channeled the original work’s passionate themes—which include heroism, love, and eroticism—into the track. He describes “Wake Up H×ERO!” as “a nostalgic yet new hero song,” blending familiar elements of classic hero themes with fresh, contemporary sounds. 

PHOENIX – From Haikyuu!! To The Top

“PHOENIX” is the first opening theme for Haikyuu!! To The Top, is the fourth season of the hit volleyball anime series. Released on February 12, 2020, “PHOENIX” marks BURNOUT SYNDROMES’ third consecutive opening theme for the Haikyuu!! series, highlighting their strong connection with the anime.

In the band’s comment, the band expressed their excitement for this ongoing collaboration, saying, “We are ecstatic!” Reflecting on the season’s progression, they added, “We have expressed this intense development with a flashy, party-like song.”

Once again, this BURNOUT SYNDROMES anime song brings an exhilarating energy that drives Haikyuu!!’s momentum.

Good Morning World! – From Dr. STONE

“Good Morning World!” is the first opening theme song for the anime Dr. STONE. This BURNOUT SYNDROMES anime song was released on August 21, 2019.

In their official comment, Kumagai shared that when he first read the manga, he sincerely thought, “I want to sing the theme song!” The band took a meticulous approach to the song creation process, following many discussions and trial and error, to create a work they were confident in. 

They hope others can feel Senku and the others through this song, which is “packed with passionate enthusiasm.” The synchronization with the world of Dr. STONE is, as the band puts it, “10 billion percent!” 

Hanaichimonme (花一匁) – From Gintama.: Shirogane no Tamashii-hen

Released on February 7, 2018, “Hanaichimonme” (花一匁, also known as “Hana Ichi Monme”) is the first ending theme for Gintama.: Shirogane no Tamashii-hen

In an interview, Kumagai shared that the initial discussion began with the thought, “Let’s just make the chorus cool.” He noted that the term Hana Ichimonme first came to his mind—a nod to the traditional Japanese children’s game of the same name. 

Indeed, this BURNOUT SYNDROMES anime song captures Gintama’s playful yet earnest essence; as Kumagai noted, “In the end, I want both enemies and allies to join hands.”

Hikariare (ヒカリアレ) – From Haikyuu!! Karasuno Koukou vs. Shiratorizawa Gakuen

Released on October 26, 2016, “Hikariare” (ヒカリアレ, also known as “Hikari Are”) is the opening theme for Haikyuu!! Karasuno Koukou vs. Shiratorizawa Gakuen, the third season of Haikyuu!!. In their official comment, Kumagai expressed gratitude for being chosen again for the opening theme, referring to it as “the miracle of meeting everyone again!”

In an interview, Kumagai shared how he felt the need to surpass their previous hit, creating something that would resonate in a new way. He described the song’s theme as not about good or evil, but about “a higher level of happiness and beauty,” noting that it is about “following one’s own beliefs to reach the next level.” 

This BURNOUT SYNDROMES anime song also serves as the theme song for Haikyu!! The Movie: Battle of Concepts, which was released the following year.

FLY HIGH!! – From Haikyuu!! Second Season

“FLY HIGH!!” is the second opening theme for the anime Haikyuu!! Second Season. Released on March 2, 2016, this BURNOUT SYNDROMES anime song is also the band’s debut single with a major record label.

The band expressed their excitement about contributing to the anime in a comment, with Kumagai sharing, “A dream from my childhood has come true.” As fans of the series, they hope listeners will think, “This song fits ‘Haikyuu!!’ perfectly.”

The success of “FLY HIGH!!” is evident. The song remains the band’s most popular song on Spotify, with over 100 million streams. In a video interview, the band revealed that “FLY HIGH!!” was pivotal in gaining international recognition, sharing, “We’ve been invited to perform all around the world, so it was this song that connected us to our international fans.”
