The current members* of SPYAIR are KENTA (Drums), MOMIKEN (Bass), YOSUKE (Vocal), and UZ (Guitar & Programming).

SPYAIR’s music, created by the band members, aims to inspire fans. In one interview, they shared, “We hope that people who listen to our music, even if it’s just a little bit, will gain some happiness and motivation.”

*In March 2022, former vocalist IKE announced his departure from the band due to health conditions. Following a competitive open audition, YOSUKE joined the group as their new vocalist in April 2023.

Ao – From Blue Miburo

“Ao” (青) is the opening theme for Blue Miburo (also known as Ao no Miburo or The Blue Wolves of Mibu.) This SPYAIR anime song was digitally released on October 19, 2024.

In their official comment, SPYAIR explains how “Ao” conveys the “changes and resolve” experienced during the transition from the “blue era” of youth to adulthood. They highlight that the anime’s opening sequence—with visuals of the main characters becoming the Shinsengumi—will move people differently than when listening to the song alone.

As the first song for the anime, the band hopes this “Ao” will become synonymous with Blue Miburo.

Orange – From Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle

“Orange” (オレンジ) is the theme song for the movie Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle. Check out the anime collaboration music video above.

Released on February 14, 2024, this SPYAIR anime song marks vocalist YOSUKE’s first anime tie-up with the band. It also serves as the theme for the 2024 Volleyball Nations League on Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) Television channels.

MOMIKEN shared that the focus of “Orange” is centered on the theme of graduation, capturing the bittersweet emotions of parting ways.

In an interview, he discussed the meaning behind the song’s name, sharing, “When I thought about graduation and parting ways, I vaguely recalled my school days and realized that the moment of saying goodbye to friends was in the evening.”

Imagining the sunset, he initially wrote phrases like “the city dyed in orange.” This led him to think, “Why not just call the sunset ‘orange’? I realized it was a word that could evoke multiple meanings.”

“Orange” evokes strong youthful memories, which become even more prominent in the movie’s end credits. MOMIKEN adds, “Even if you just listen to the song, I think it can remind you of your youth. But when you watch it with the movie, that feeling is amplified, and the tears won’t stop flowing as a form of detox.”

“Orange” beautifully encapsulates the themes of graduation and nostalgia, making it a perfect fit for the commercially successful film.

Wadachi – From Gintama: The Very Final

“Wadachi” (轍 ~Wadachi~) is the theme song for the movie Gintama: The Very Final. This SPYAIR anime song was released on January 6, 2021, as part of their first EP of the same name.

In their official comment, SPYAIR expresses their gratitude to the franchise, as their involvement with Gintama has significantly impacted the band’s life. “We’ve been accompanying you on this journey since the Kabukicho Four Devas Arc,” they share “and now that it’s finally coming to an end, there’s some sadness as well.”

In an interview, KENTA highlighted the unique tone of “Wadachi.” Unlike their previous high-energy Gintama songs, more suited for battle scenes, this track is more reflective and nostalgic. “We wanted to create a song that made everyone say, ‘Gintama was a great manga and anime.'”

Furthermore, the timing of the film’s release during the COVID-19 pandemic added another layer of meaning. Vocalist IKE spoke about the challenges they faced, noting that the lyrics provided a sense of relief and hope. “Given the current situation, there are probably many things people feel like giving up on, but my message is that you don’t have to give up and throw away everything you’ve done so far.”

The song “Wadachi” is a fitting conclusion, capturing the essence of the beloved series.

One Day – From Haikyuu!! To The Top

“One Day” is the second ending theme for the fourth season of Haikyuu!! To The Top, the fourth season of the hit series.

Released on November 11, 2020, this SPYAIR anime song aims for a lighter feel—a slight departure from their previous season openers, “Imagination” and “I’m a Believer” (see below to learn about each song). In an interview, MOMIKEN explains, “It’s not too fast, but it doesn’t feel too laid-back either.”

The light, motivating tone of “One Day” is especially relevant, within and beyond the anime, as season four was released during the COVID-19 pandemic.

MOMIKEN expresses, “Given the current situation, there are probably many things people feel like giving up on, but the message is that you don’t have to give up and throw away everything you’ve done so far. Maybe things will change shape, but…you should go for it.”

This optimistic message resonates deeply with the anime, making “One Day” a fitting conclusion to each Haikyu!! episode.

I Wanna Be… – From Gintama.: Shirogane no Tamashii-hen

“I Wanna Be…” serves as the second opening theme for Gintama.: Shirogane no Tamashii-hen. This

SPYAIR anime song was released on July 25, 2018.

As explained in a Billboard Japan article, the music video, filmed at a pier late at night, transforms a desolate warehouse landscape into a bustling downtown scene. This nostalgic direction captures the song’s contemplative nature, reflecting on the past, present, and future. Check it out below.

“I Wanna Be…” delves into themes of self-discovery, nostalgia, and the pursuit of dreams amidst the passage of time. SPYAIR masterfully blends energetic rock with heartfelt lyrics, creating a powerful anthem that resonates with the Gintama world.

RAGE OF DUST – From Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans

SPYAIR’s “RAGE OF DUST” is the intense first opening theme for the second season of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, released on November 9, 2016.

While slightly different from their previous tracks, this SPYAIR anime song maintains the band’s signature sound, fitting seamlessly with the intense atmosphere of the anime.

As IKE explains in an interview, “This kind of song’s style is already in our ‘blood.’ It’s a track colored by the band’s groove.”

“RAGE OF DUST” represents SPYAIR’s evolution as a band. IKE acknowledges that they may not have expressed themselves in prior songs, noting they may have played it safer (in a good way) in the past. He adds, “I like that we’re bringing out our true essence. This is what I think “rock” is.”

KENTA echoes this sentiment, “I’m simply happy that we can release a song like this (where we’ve revealed our true colors) as a single.”

I’m A Believer – From Haikyuu!! Second Season

“I’m A Believer” (アイム・ア・ビリーバー) is the opening theme song for the second season of Haikyuu!!

This SPYAIR anime song was released on October 21, 2015, and it quickly became popular among fans, both in Japan and internationally.

In an interview, MOMIKEN from SPYAIR explained the song’s message of perseverance and self-belief: “It’s a song with a message to encourage you to keep going, believing in yourself. It embodies SPYAIR’s typical, or rather quintessential, message in its lyrics.”

This aligns perfectly with the themes of Haikyuu!!, which focuses on the perseverance of its characters. UZ also elaborated on the band’s intentions, sharing “We made it with the thought of expressing the characters growing step by step through the music.”

“I’m A Believer” itself is a testament to one of Haikyuu!!’s core messages—believing in oneself despite the obstacles. MOMIKEN explains, “As the title suggests, even if you stumble or fall, at least believe in yourself!”

This SPYAIR anime song became another hit from Haikyuu!!, capturing the relentless spirit of its characters.

Imagination – From Haikyuu!!

“Imagination” (イマジネーション) is the first opening theme song for the anime Haikyuu!!.  Released on April 30, 2014, this hit song has become synonymous with the high-energy, youth-filled spirit of the series.

Reflecting on the song’s creation and its impact, MOMIKEN of SPYAIR shared that the band’s image transformed significantly thanks to Haikyuu!!. “I think SPYAIR didn’t have a ‘youthful’ feel before we wrote ‘Imagination,'” he said in an interview.

The anime played a crucial role in shaping the band’s new association; he adds, “because the series added a backdrop to the song, it made people think of SPYAIR as a band full of youthful passion.”

Furthermore, the vivid opening animation of Haikyuu!! also contributed to this lasting impression. MOMIKEN noted, “I’m sure when ‘Imagination’ plays, people picture the scene of the gymnasium.”

“Imagination” continues to be one of SPYAIR’s most popular songs internationally, with the highest number of streams out of all of their songs on Spotify.

Indeed, this hit SPYAIR anime song would pave the way for the band’s future collaborations with the popular series—intertwining their music with the anime’s energetic story for the seasons to come.

JUST ONE LIFE – From Samurai Flamenco

“JUST ONE LIFE” is the first opening theme for the anime Samurai Flamenco. This SPYAIR anime song was released on November 13, 2013.

In their official comment, SPYAIR shared their enthusiasm about contributing to the series, sharing that the song stays true to their straightforward style while fitting into the animated world.

The members of SPYAIR note that, much like the protagonist of Samurai Flamenco, they think all band members have a desire within them to be someone’s hero. They used these feelings, connected with the protagonist’s foolishly pure lines, to draw out the lyrics for the song.

As SPYAIR writes, “This song is a straightforward rock number that passionately shouts, “Let’s keep dreaming with all our might like crazy!” They hope it can provide courage and strength to those who live earnestly every day.

Genjou Destruction – From Gintama: The Final Chapter: Be Forever Yorozuya

“Genjou Destruction” (現状ディストラクション) is the electrifying theme song for the movie Gintama: The Final Chapter: Be Forever Yorozuya. This SPYAIR anime song was released on July 3, 2013, and was also used as one of the opening themes for the TV show Rock Kyoudai.

The creation of “Genjou Destruction” was driven by SPYAIR’s core ethos of pushing boundaries. Lyricist MOMIKEN emphasized this in an interview, saying, “Breaking through the status quo has always been a theme SPYAIR has expressed. Even now, we feel like there’s still more ahead.”

This sentiment is echoed in the raw, live sound of “Genjou Destruction,” which they note contrasts with the electronic sounds prevalent in J-POP today. UZ, the band’s guitarist, added, “By playing instruments, our natural sound is born, and we want to let people hear that music.”

The group felt a strong connection and responsibility to the Gintama team through working on multiple projects together. They noted the trust the staff had in the band, and MOMIKEN expressed, “We want to do our best for these people. We want to make the work they’re putting their energy into even better.”

Sakura Mitsutsuki (サクラミツツキ) – From Gintama’: Enchousen

“Sakura Mitsutsuki” (サクラミツツキ), also written as “Sakuramitsutsuki,” is the second anime opening for Gintama’: Enchousen. Released on March 3, 2013, this SPYAIR anime song is used during the anime’s Courtesan of a Nation Arc.

In an interview, MOMIKEN explained the meaning behind the title “Sakura Mitsutsuki”  as a coined word combining cherry blossom (Sakura) and full moon (Mitsuki), representing the theme of meetings and farewells.

Like most SPYAIR songs, the lyrics convey a positive message about breaking through situations where you feel something is missing or lacking within yourself and striving for something better than what you have now.

MOMIKEN also mentioned how the lyrics express a constant feeling of incompleteness, with a bright undertone. “We always feel a sense of incompleteness and doubt…However, the lyrics express a positive feeling that if we keep striving, we’ll eventually find a place of fulfillment.”

My World – From Mobile Suit Gundam AGE

“My World” is the second ending theme song for the anime Mobile Suit Gundam AGE: Memory of Eden.

As the ending theme for the Asemu Arc (episodes 16 to 28), this SPYAIR anime song was released on March 14, 2012. It was also featured as one of the opening theme songs for the TV music program Rock Kyoudai.

“My World” holds a special place within the band. As UZ shared in an interview, “I usually approach music mathematically, with a lot of calculation, but ‘My World’ went beyond all that. It exceeded my imagination.”

“‘My World’ went beyond all that. It exceeded my imagination.”

UZ

In the band’s official comment, they highlight the lyrics, “For me to be me / what is it that I must not lose?” (僕が僕であるために / 失っちゃいけないモノはなに?) They share that this question is at the heart of the song’s message, directed at people struggling with worries.

In an interview, MOMIKEN explained this point further: “The self-questioning about whether what you’re doing is right or wrong is a feeling everyone has…’My World’ became a song that can be with you, reflecting your situation and emotions at any time.”

Samurai Heart (Some Like It Hot!!) – From Gintama

“Samurai Heart (Some Like It Hot!!)” (サムライハート(Some Like It Hot!!)) is the 17th anime ending theme for Gintama, featured during the Kabukicho Four Devas Arc. Released on June 8, 2011, this song became a hit and brought massive recognition to the band.

Originally, “Samurai Heart (Some Like It Hot!!)” was not intended to be a single. Initially, the band created the song as an album track or to use casually for live performances. KENTA says in an interview, “Instead of putting a lot of effort into it, we made it as a song everyone could relax and move to.”

This direction changed when MOMIKEN added lyrics expressing loneliness, giving the upbeat song a deeper meaning. When the opportunity for a Gintama theme song arose, the band included this track in the selection, which was well-received.

The collaboration with the Gintama team significantly influenced the song. IKE mentioned how the song’s unique title “was born from the image of the series.” Additionally, KENTA added that the song’s chant (“Hey!! Hey!! Samurai Heart (Some Like It Hot)”) was included after discussions with the Gintama team.

“Samurai Heart (Some Like It Hot!!)” marked a turning point for SPYAIR. Reflecting on their career years later, IKE said, “[this song] was a breakthrough that motivated us. Without this song, some of us might have left the band.”

This SPYAIR anime song was a major success and paved the way for the band’s future achievements.

Last Moment – From BLEACH

“Last Moment” is the 25th anime ending for the popular series BLEACH. This SPYAIR anime song was released on December 1, 2010, as the band’s second single. It also marks their first anime collaboration.

The members of SPYAIR expressed their excitement about contributing to BLEACH, a series they deeply admired. “I love BLEACH so much that I even made a song called ‘BLEACH’ during our indie days. I am incredibly happy and moved,” they shared in a media comment.
