Every Yorushika Anime Song

Most J-rock and Vocaloid fans are well aware of Yorushika, the faceless duo that’s made major waves in the Japanese music industry.

This article introduces every Yorushika anime song in a TV series or movie.

Who is Yorushika?

Yorushika is a Japanese rock band formed by the talented Vocaloid producer and song composer, n-buna (pronounced na-bu-na), in collaboration with the talented vocalist, suis (pronounced su-ee).

The band was created in 2017 and made their major debut in 2019. Adhering to putting their work at the forefront, most information about the duo, including their faces, has yet to be publicly disclosed.

Martian – Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary

Released on May 9, 2025, “Martian” (火星人) is the opening theme song for Season 2 of Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary.

In “Martian”, Mars represents longing and an ideal. “This is a song about wanting to escape from the place you’re in now and go to Mars,” n-buna explains in his official comment.

The following lyric is from Sakutaro Hagiwara’s Cat, a poem featured in his 1917 collection Howling at the Moon:

ぴんとたてた尻尾のさきから糸のやうなみかづきがかすんでゐる
Loosely translated to: “From the stiffly raised tip of the tail, a thread-like crescent moon is hazy.

n-buna incorporates the poetic technique of honkadori (本歌取り) as he alludes to an older poem. The lyrics of “Martian” gradually shift in form and repeat, revealing the original poem at the end. He concludes, “That original work is what Mars is to me.”

Snake – From Orb: On the Movements of the Earth

The collaboration between Yorushika and Orb continues with “Snake” (ヘビ), the second ending theme for the series. The song was digitally released on January 17, 2025.

In his official comment, n-buna explained that the song is about a snake awakening in spring and exploring the world. The idea comes from the Biblical scene of the serpent tempting humans to consume the fruit, a symbol of humanity’s “simple desire for knowledge,” he writes.

“Snake” is also based on these lines by Tang Dynasty poet Yuan Zhen, in his work Lí Sī:

 曾经沧海难为水 / 除却巫山不是云

n-buna loosely translates this to, “After knowing the ocean, ordinary waters no longer satisfy. Clouds other than those of Mount Wu cannot be thought of as clouds.” He described Yuan Zhen’s piece, with its metaphors for his late wife, as “a simple and deep love poem.”

Aporia – From Orb: On the Movements of the Earth

“Aporia” (アポリア) is the ending song for Orb: On the Movements of the Earth (Chi.: Chikyuu no Undou no Tsuite). This Yorushika anime song was released on October 7, 2024.

The title of this Yorushika anime song is derived from Ancient Greek philosophy; aporia signifies uncertainty or doubt, often emerging from a problem that is difficult to resolve.

In his official comment, n-buna explained that he wrote this song by paralleling the philosophical term with “the desire to know the unknowable.” He describes Chi. as “a work that embodies the passion ‘to know.’”

The balloon in the lyrics is used as “a metaphor for the limitless desire for knowledge.” As it rises, it offers a different view than from the ground—a perspective Yorushika aims to capture through this song.

Sunny (Haru) – From Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

“Sunny,” known as Haru (晴る, pronounced hareru in Japanese), is the first opener for Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. This Yorushika anime song was released in January of 2024, and became of the biggest anime openings of the year.

In their official comment, n-buna expressed that this song is about sunny weather.
“More precisely, it’s a song about wishing for sunny days when the conditions are not sunny,” he comments.

He hopes the song can add some brightness to the world of Frieren and all of the characters’ journeys.

Moonbath (Gekkouyoku) – From Kaina of the Great Snow Sea: Star Sage

“Moonbath”, also known as Gekkouyoku (月光浴), is the theme song for the movie Kaina of the Great Snow Sea: Star Sage. It was released in October of 2023.

In his comment, n-buna commented on how the moon symbolizes this passage of time. This idea comes from the Japanese character for moon (月). While the country adopted the Gregorian calendar in the late 1800s, remnants of the lunar calendar remain in the Japanese language.

If we are always within the moon, n-buna encourages us to consider rephrasing the time we spend as moonlight bathing.

Setting Sun (Shayou) – From The Dangers in My Heart

“Setting Sun”, also known as Shayou (斜陽), is the first opening theme song for the series From The Dangers in My Heart, or Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu

In his official comment, n-buna wrote how the relationships most difficult to put into words can be described using simple metaphors. The song was released in May of 2023.

Telepath  – From Kaina of the Great Snow Sea

Released in January of 2023, Telepath (テレパス) is the anime opening for the TV series Kaina of the Great Snow Sea. As shared by n-buna, this Yorushika anime song explores the idea that selfless empathy can be a form of telepathy.

Kaina of the Great Snow Sea is a 3D CGI animated work, less commonly seen in anime relative to its 2D counterparts. In his comment, n-buna expresses appreciation for the interesting visuals and respect for the creator’s effort to create something new.

Every Yorushika Anime Song From A Whisker Away

Yorushika played a significant musical role in the animated film “A Whisker Away.” Released in 2020, the story revolves around a teenage girl who gains the opportunity to transform into a cat.  It offers a blend of self-identity and coming-of-age themes, all within the enchanting backdrop of magical realism. Three different Yorushika anime songs are featured in the animated movie.

During their initial meeting, n-buna comments on the Director’s request for the group to “create freely.” These words brought him great joy, helping him create pieces that reflect Yorushika’s creative identity. He hopes these two works each shine independently while creating a beautiful harmony in coexisting.

Ghost In A Flower (Hana ni Bourei) – Opening Song

Ghost In A Flower, also known as Hana ni Bourei (花に亡霊), is the main theme song for the movie A Whisker Away. It was released in April 2020 and was certified platinum in streaming by the Recording Industry Association of Japan.

According to n-buna, the title refers to the idea that ghosts are memories. Therefore, we see these memories in flowers that bloom in the summer.

Night Journey (Yakou) – Insert Song

Night Journey, also known as Yakou (夜行), was the insert song for the movie A Whisker Away. It was released in March of 2020.

In this Yorushika anime song, the term night is a metaphor for the night in one’s life; night conveys the aspects of growing up, forgetting, and moving toward the end of one’s life.

Liar (Usotsuki) –  Ending Song

Liar, also known as Usotsuki (嘘月), was the ending song for the movie A Whisker Away. The song was released in January of 2021, as a part of the EP Sousaku.

This Yorushika anime song also gives homage to Ozaki Hōsai, a Japanese poet known for his free-form haikus. The lyrics are interspersed with several references to his poetic works. In her comment, suis commented that she sang with the wish to make everyone who watched the movie cry.
