YUI Anime Songs
CHE.R.RY – Featured in ReLIFE
“CHE.R.RY” is featured as the anime ending for episode 15 of ReLIFE. Originally released on March 7, 2007, the song was used over a decade later in this anime adaptation, which features a different ending theme for each episode.
Check out this 2020 performance on the popular YouTube channel, THE FIRST TAKE.
In a 2007 interview, YUI described the song as “really cute.” She shares, “I wrote a refreshing melody with a spring image in mind.” She added that the line “I fell in love” contributed to its cuteness.
The periods in “CHE.R.RY” are intentional; YUI explained that they are intended to capture the feelings of unrequited love.
Fun fact: In 2024, “CHE.R.RY” was used as the ending theme for episode 8 of Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian. This version is performed by Sumire Uesaka, who voices the protagonist, Alya.
fight – Featured in Lu Over the Wall
Originally released on September 5, 2012, “fight” was initially created as the assigned song for the middle school division of the 79th NHK National School Music Competition. Five years later, it was featured as one of three insert songs in the 2017 fantasy film Lu Over the Wall.
Lyrically, “fight” presents a realistic perspective on dreams and setbacks, with lines like “Not every dream you imagine will come true” and “Winning and losing actually matter.”
In a media comment, YUI explained her intention behind the lyrics, sharing, “By accepting reality, new hope will surely come into view.”
again – From Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
“again” is the first opening theme for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Released on June 3, 2009, this YUI anime song marks her first track following her 2008 hiatus.
During her time away, YUI tried new things, including traveling abroad, getting her driver’s license, and writing a song for another artist for the first time.
These experiences shaped “again,” which she describes in her media comment as “a perfect track for taking on a challenge with a fresh mindset.”
As a song filled with YUI’s confidence, “again” carries “the strength to take new, positive steps forward.” Years later, it remains YUI’s most streamed song.
Rolling Star – From BLEACH
“Rolling Star” is the fifth opening theme for BLEACH. Released on January 17, 2007, this YUI anime song marks her second collaboration with the BLEACH series.
In an interview, YUI shared that she wanted to create a song she could perform live while strumming an electric guitar. As she wrote, the lyrics naturally took on a forward-looking tone.
As Yui explained, “Rolling Star” became a motivational song that conveyed, “If you’re serious, let’s fight!”
LIFE – From BLEACH
“LIFE” is the fifth ending theme for BLEACH. Released on November 9, 2005, this YUI anime song marks her first collaboration with an animated series.
“…it has become a song that can push you forward.”
YUI
“LIFE” embodies resilience, self-acceptance, and the determination to carve one’s path despite the challenges. In a 2005 interview (translated by the fansite YUI-Lover), YUI shared that she took the title “straight from the theme of the song.”
YUI described the lyrics “Things are not simple, that’s why I can keep on living” as both a reflection of her personal outlook and an attempt to sound tough.
While she acknowledged that these words might not always reach someone struggling, she explained, “I think in its entirety, it has become a song that can push you forward.”
